As COP26 in Glasgow approaches, CCBR is joining a national Day of Action on Friday 1 October—one month before—to call on Prime Minister Scott Morrison to take a strong 2030 climate target to the summit.

And we will be keeping up the pressure throughout October!

The United States and United Kingdom have increased their 2030 emissions reductions targets:

• UK by 68% (from 1990 levels) by 2030

• USA 50-52% (on 2005 levels) by 2030

• Australia is currently sitting on 26-28% (on 2005 levels) by 2030.

Help Day of Action organisers Friends of the Earth create a big buzz on social media.

• Make your own sign with Australia's 2030 climate target as the theme, and include #MatchBorisAndBiden.

• Take a selfie and share it on your own social media with a challenge to friends ( naming them is great!) to be even more creative than you ... use the #MatchBorisAndBidenOnClimate and #Auspol hashtags..

• Even if you don't have a social media account, join us by Zoom at 6pm on Friday October 1. (Register before, here.) Bring a big piece of paper, a marker pen, and as much creativity as you can muster to make your own sign. We will be photographing each image to share on CCBR's Facebook page over the month of October. As we will send you your personalised picture.

• Add your call for climate targets to your email signature during October. (Google How to add an image to your email signature if you are not sure how).

• Share your pictures - or your ideas to spread the campaign - with CCBR on Facebook or Twitter.

• invite your friends to sign and share the petition.

Adani doesn't want investors to know they are destroying our environment – and Wangan and Jagalingou land – to dig Australia's biggest coal mine. But environment-wrecking projects can be stopped even when they are under construction: the Jabiluka mine, James Price Point gas plant and the Franklin Dam were all victories for people power.

Why is the Adani campaign so important?

If we really want to slow Australia's contribution to climate change, reducing our coal exports is essential. We export fully 200% more greenhouse gas equivalent (to be burnt overseas) than we emit in Australia from every source, including manufacturing, agriculture, transport and electricity.

That's why we can't let a new coal basin in Queensland open up, especially with other billionaires like Gina Reinhart and Clive Palmer watching and waiting before they activate their coal leases in the Galilee Basin.

Can we make a difference?

Yes, we can!

After the Adani campaign ensured that the company would NOT receive a billion dollar loan from the Federal government, the campaign focused on companies working, or potentially working, with Adani. Over 100 companies have now said No to Adani, after they were alerted to its poor record on environmental degradation, pollution and indigenous rights, as well as the damage to the climate of opening a new mega mine.

They include many insurers: Lloyd's of London, which handles 40% of the world's energy insurance, devised a policy that went well beyond Adani - it ruled out backing all thermal coal, oil sands and Arctic energy exploration.

Retiree with superannuation? Young person with a bank account? Company shareholder? Your savings are invested in projects that can either increase global warming – or slow it down.

Do you know how your bank or super fund invests your money?

When governments fail to act with urgency, others need to step up. Forward-thinking companies recognise that for their survival, and ours, they need to divest from fossil fuels. Taking care of the climate is responsible economic management.

How is YOUR money being used? Climate Change Balmain-Rozelle, along with Market Forces and the Australian Conservation Foundation, can help you tell your financial institution that YOU recognise the risk of business-as-usual. Don’t just make a switch, make a fuss to effect change.

What you can do

• Put your bank on notice or tell your super fund you want them to do better (Market Forces website has an email ready for you to send).

• See how the Big 4 Banks rank on lending for gas, and ask yours to be the first to exit gas and invest in a safe future.

• Find a new bank or super fund that better aligns with your values - but make a fuss to your existing one first!

Update January 2021: The Environmental Defenders Office has just launched a court challenge over the approval of this project in north west NSW, on behalf of the Mullaley Gas and Pipeline Accord (MGPA). MGPA will argue the IPC failed to properly assess the climate impacts from this project and didn’t assess the impacts from the transmission pipeline Santos will have to build to make the project viable. Update September 2020: The Independent Planning Commission approved this project (with over 300 conditions) in spite of over 20,000 submissions against it. The campaign is not yet over.

The NSW Government has recommended approval of an 850-well coal seam gas field in the Pilliga forest wilderness and farmland near Narrabri.

This represents an enormous expansion of NSW gas extraction ( 4 times the size of previously approved CSG projects in NSW).

The Pilliga is the largest temperate forest we have left in the state. Turning it into an industrial gas field will poison groundwater, carve up the forest with roads and pipelines, endanger koalas and other threatened species, and increase the risk of wildfires.

Encourage the Independent Planning Commission to decide against expansion of Coal Seam Gas mining in Pilliga area by mining giant Santos. Make your submission by August 10.

Climate Change Balmain-Rozelle has long been a supporter of solar PV on public and private buildings in the Inner West. We are excited that three community groups now have initiatives so everyone can have a share in a renewable future.

Renters, future renovators and shady characters:

for whatever reason, you may be locked out of installing your own system. But you can now join a cooperative to produce solar power, and receive the benefit on your electricity bill. Haystacks is a 3-hectare community-owned solar garden (1MW) on a farm in the NSW Riverina. What we like? It benefits the local community, and your share is transferable (within NSW) so you could pass on the future credits to, say, a family member if your circumstances change. You have until the end of November to express interest by joining the co-op. EXTENDED TO DECEMBER! We recommend attending an online information session.

Apartment owners:

as individuals you could join the Haystacks co-operative, but there may be other solutions to get your whole building producing solar. Find out the options at Solar4Strata, a webinar by Climate Justice Sydney East, on November 16 at 6.30pm. Register.

Home owners:

not sure where to start? Our mates at Inner West Community Energy have helped 80 local residents to get solar power in the last three years or so. They provide a free service to deliver practical advice to individuals, businesses and community organisations who want to install solar, and connect them to a network of trusted installers. And IWCE has just constructed and commissioned a massive solar PV system on Acre Eatery at Camperdown Commons.

We are pleased to let you know about these ways to act, because they are all initiated by not-for-profit groups, helping individuals work together to reduce fossil fuel emissions.

On September 25, school students across Australia will be calling on politicians to Fund Our Future not Gas. CCBR supporters have already begun to amplify the message - socially distanced of course!

There has never been a more important time to ensure that, as we recover from the current economic shock, our future jobs and industries are based on the clean renewable resources Australia has in abundance, as well as on the principle of inter-generational justice.

Yet our Federal Government's response is heaviiy weighted to using public money to support the expansion of gas, both domestically and as an export. We've asked for a meeting with our local MP, Anthony Albanese, to ask about his policy in coal and gas, and the transition we must have over the next decade.

Adani plans to ship coal from its proposed Carmichael coal project in Queensland to Godda in eastern India where they are constructing a new coal-fired power station to burn Australian coal to generate dirty, overpriced power for Bangladesh. Adani’s proposed coal plant at Godda will displace thousands of Indigenous adivasi (Aboriginal) people, and be highly polluting for the local community and global climate.

In September 2019, Adani’s newly proposed water pipeline for the coal power plant received approval, enabling Adani to take 36 billion litres a year out of the Ganges to support their power plant. The surrounding communities continue to resist Adani’s plan despite serious oppression.
