4 things to do...

while the Govt shapes the ETS...

Dear CCBR Supporters,

At present the Federal Govt is formulating the "White Paper", out early Dec, which will outline Australia's response to Climate Change and set legislation in motion for the introduction of an Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). The coming weeks will be vital in influencing the Government's decision making process and amidst the current economic crisis there is a heightened need to continue to show the pollies that Climate Change is still on our priority list. No planet - No Economy.

Please consider coming along to Balmain Primary at 7.30 next Monday evening (details below) and letting others know about this event - a strong showing from our community would send a powerful message back to both State and Federal Governments - a weak showing and we run the risk of the grassroots climate movement appearing to be a lame duck!!

1. Local Event: Balmain Primary Nov 3rd 7.30 - 8.30pm....

Carmel Tebutt the new State Minister for Climate Change will join Verity Firth (our State member) and Tanya Plibersek (our Federal Member) on Monday evening to explain the Federal Govt's Strategy on combating Climate Change.

The Govt. is proposing a Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS). The Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) will be one of the main mechanisms that Govt. is proposing to employ to cap carbon. As it stands this proposed ETS will not encourage large polluters like coal fired power stations to transition quickly away from polluting industries. We need to encourage the government to build greater incentives to make this mechanism work effectively.

That is why we are urging you to attend - plus the pollies will be gauging the level of local interest at this event.

Time: 7.30 – 8.30pm

Venue: Balmain Public School, 1 Eaton St, Balmain.

2. Web / phone action: Greenpeace - "Your Call on Coal"...

Greenpeace is currently running a campaign where you book a call to Kevin Rudd.

See the campaign at: http://www.yourcalloncoal.org/gpcm/landing.php?source=embed

"What would you do with $1.2 billion dollars? Give it to a big, greedy polluter or invest it in renewable energy? Time is running out — we have just six weeks to encourage Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to make the right choice, and your call can make all the difference. Emissions trading is our opportunity to get the solution to climate change right — so why is the federal government planning to hand over $1.2 billion in cash to the big, greedy coal power industry as an apology for their Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme?"

3. Web survey: GetUp, show the Govt. your priorities....

Nothing talks to politicians as strongly as polling. That's why GetUp are pollingsupporters to let Federal MPs know their constituent's collective priorities.

Please take 2 minutes to complete this quick online poll:  www.getup.org.au/campaign/yourvote

"CLEAN ENERGY - STRONG TARGETS - TAKE ACTION NOW - WALK FOR YOUR FUTURE"

Now more than ever there needs to be a big turn out for Walk Against Warming.

Come along with friends, family or join CCBR.

When: Saturday Nov 15, 11am.

We will be meeting near the war memorial in martin Place - between George and Pitt Streets  - you'll find us next to the CCBR sunflower banner from 10.30 onwards.

and....What CCBR is doing: "Step In to Step It Up"....

CCBR is participating in "Step In to Step It Up"... http://stepitupaustralia.wordpress.com/about/

Because this next month is so important many CAGs (Climate Action Groups) like ours from all over Australia will be approaching their Federal MPs with two major requests:

  1. That in December, the Government makes a commitment that 2010 will be Australia’s peak carbon year.
  2. Ditch the proposed concessions to the emission-intensive industries in the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme.

This is the first time that independant CAGs will be uniting with the same message in this way.

The first phase: CCBR will be meeting with a representative from Tanya Plibersek's office next Wednesday. We will be requesting that these two points are reflected in the White Paper (Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme) and requesting that she support the proposed Climate Protection Bill.

On Monday at the Forum we will be giving Tanya a copy of "Climate Code Red".

The second phase of "Step In to Step It Up" will occur in response to the White Paper - early December. If our requests have not been met we plan to occupy Tanya's office in some way - there are many ways that this could be done (check out the website) and we will be exploring options on getting our message across in the coming weeks.

Check out the website for ideas http://stepitupaustralia.wordpress.com/category/how-to-step-in-to-step-it-up/ and let us know if you would like to be part of it!!

and lastly....
